Methodology summary

Full methodology at grocerypulse.ca/methodology. Summary:

50 canonical basket items across 9 categories (meat, dairy, bakery, fruit, vegetables, pantry, frozen, beverages, household)
Weighted Jevons price index with ILO/IMF form, weighted to match StatCan Food purchased from stores sub-basket
Cheapest available item per canonical SKU within each banner (reflects consumer substitution behavior)
A banner × city pair is included in rankings only if 45 of 50 basket items match (90% coverage)
All prices collected from publicly accessible retailer websites; weekly scrapes

Known limitations

St. John's NL not yet in coverage (expected May 2026)
Walmart and Costco not covered (bot protection; roadmap Q3 2026)
Online-list prices only; in-store shelf prices may differ (≤2% shelf-stable, 4–6% produce/meat)
This is the first monthly release; MoM comparisons start with the May 2026 report
