Loblaws vs No Frills vs Superstore: Which Is Actually Cheapest?

·7 min read

Loblaws, No Frills, and Real Canadian Superstore are all owned by Loblaw Companies Ltd., Canada's largest grocery retailer. But despite sharing an owner, their prices are very different. We compared the same 50-item basket at all three banners to find out exactly how much.

The Price Gap

Across the cities we track, here's the typical pattern:

  • No Frills is consistently the cheapest of the three — typically 15-20% cheaper than Loblaws
  • Real Canadian Superstore falls in the middle, about 5-10% cheaper than Loblaws
  • Loblaws is the most expensive, reflecting its positioning as a premium full-service store

For a 50-item basket that costs around $260 at Loblaws, the same items might cost around $230 at Superstore and $210-$220 at No Frills. That's a potential $40+ savings per trip — or over $2,000 per year — just by switching from Loblaws to No Frills.

Why the Difference?

All three stores source from the same supply chain and sell many of the same products, including the President's Choice and No Name private-label brands. The price difference comes down to the store format and operating model:

Loblaws

  • Full-service deli, bakery, and prepared foods
  • Higher staffing levels
  • Premium store design and in-store experience
  • Wider selection of specialty and organic products
  • Higher rent locations (urban shopping centres)

Real Canadian Superstore

  • Large-format warehouse-style stores
  • Good selection including Joe Fresh clothing and general merchandise
  • Moderate staffing levels
  • Self-checkout focus
  • Suburban locations with lower rent

No Frills

  • Bare-bones store design
  • Franchise model — owners are incentivized to keep costs low
  • Minimal staffing, bag-your-own groceries
  • Heavy focus on No Name and PC brands
  • Smaller store format, curated selection

Which Loblaw Banner Is in Your City?

Not all three banners are available everywhere. Here's the general availability:

  • No Frills — Available in Ontario, Western Canada, and Atlantic Canada. Not in Quebec (Maxi is the Loblaw discount banner there).
  • Real Canadian Superstore — Available in Ontario and Western Canada. Atlantic Superstore serves the same role in Atlantic Canada.
  • Loblaws — Primarily Ontario. Provigo serves a similar role in Quebec.

What About PC Optimum Points?

All three banners participate in the PC Optimum loyalty program. If you factor in points earned on purchases (roughly 1% back on most items, with targeted offers potentially much higher), the effective price gap narrows slightly. However, the base prices at No Frills are still significantly lower than Loblaws even without considering points.

The best strategy: shop at No Frills for the lowest base prices and collect PC Optimum points for additional savings.

Bottom Line

If you're shopping at Loblaws and want to save money without changing what you buy, switch to No Frills or Superstore. You'll find most of the same products at significantly lower prices.
