Food-basket research / a worked example

A grocery price can exist and still leave a food-basket gap

Five recorded listings show why product variants, package units and missing weights need separate checks before a basket comparison.

Finding a price for “milk” is only the first step in costing a defined basket. The fat percentage, variant and package size still need to fit the item the study intends to measure.

The retained Toronto observations include ordinary 2% milk at $6.44 for 4 L at Loblaws and a microfiltered listing at $6.25 for 4 L at No Frills. The latter is excluded from our example target of ordinary 2% milk. The lower listed price does not resolve the variant difference.

Three checks answer three different questions

Food definition: does the form and variant fit? Package basis: are we comparing a stated volume, count, mass or whole item? Analysis weight: if a calculation requires kilograms, do we actually have the mass?

A listing price does not by itself establish equivalence to a target basket item. Excluded variants stay out of the comparison; unstated mass stays unknown. Download the five review examples.

A package conversion cannot fix a different food

A 500 g bag of broccoli florets does not match a target of one broccoli crown. Dividing its price by a guessed crown weight would add an assumption without fixing the food-form difference. The example keeps that listing excluded.

A valid item price can still have an unknown weight

A romaine head can fit a per-head target while its mass remains unavailable. A study that needs kilograms must obtain a measured weight or document its own estimation method. Likewise, 4 L of milk and 946 mL of oil state volumes; this example does not turn those volumes into assumed masses.

A useful assessment therefore returns a coverage checklist alongside the price file: fits, excluded variants, unavailable items and missing measurement fields. It helps the analyst decide which gaps matter to the actual research question.

Evidence and scope

Every price shown here was captured October 1, 2026; the retained extract and literal product/package facts were reviewed October 7. Store names, listing titles, package descriptions and dates remain in the downloadable CSV.

The five target specifications illustrate a mapping review. They are not a completed mapping of any official food basket, and they do not estimate the mass of whole produce. Advertised prices may differ from a location’s checkout prices.
